Botulinum medicine (shortened to Botox) is now popular in Sydney society in fact it is becoming a grooming necessity for people in the city.
However I am always amazed when I hear the amount of stories and half truths which surround the painless treatment. Below are some of the urban legends which I hear daily at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a doctor.

Misconception # 1: I may not have the ability to express myself normally!
Beneath the skin of the face are approximately sixty muscles. These usually work harmoniously, however from persistent movement lines can appear. If an excess of Botox is used the facial expression may become moderately less expressive. The dose injected by most physicians are calculated to make you appear refreshed, however you will still look just as expressive.
By injecting the proper amount of the wrinkle injection in precisely the right areas one should have a softening of the fine lines and wrinkles without reducing facial expression.
Misconception # 2: Botulinum is a toxin!
This to some extent is right. Its medical term is Botulinum Toxin Type A. Too great a dose may loosen facial muscles that you do not want relaxed and may even make you extremely sick.
Chemists have an old phrase that states ‘everything is a poison - all depending on the dose’. All medicinal drugs in a large dosage can make you unwell. In fact water can be a poison if you take too much.
Misconception # 3: Botox injections hurt!
At Star Cosmetic Medicine the physician utilises a hypodermic needle smaller than a hair. Some people have compared the shots to a bug bite. It unquestionably is less painful than a procedure like a blood test.
Misconception # 4: My face will not be as sensitive!
False. Botulinum medicine works on the neuromuscular junction, and not on sensate nerve fibers. Botox just targets the ability to relax muscular tissues.
Misconception # 5. You need to keep having Botox or you will get worse fine lines and wrinkles than ever!
Also untrue.
You can expect Botox to be effective for upwards of three months. Later treatments tend to last a little longer. Gradually as muscle strength builds up again the lines will return little by little. However they will certainly be no more noticeable than before.
Even should you do not have Botox injections ever again - those lines should be smoother than if you had never been treated. This, of course is mainly the case because your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the therapy.
